Trailer Safety Inspection in Campbellville, ON

Trailer Safety

Understanding the Yellow Safety Inspection Sticker in Ontario

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO) mandates periodic safety inspections for vehicles and trailers under the Highway Traffic Act. These inspections are conducted at MTO-authorized Motor Vehicle Inspection Stations. Upon passing the safety inspection, a Yellow Safety Inspection Sticker is issued, which must be attached to your vehicle or trailer. Here is the information about who requires a Yellow Safety Inspection Sticker:

Weight Criteria

To determine if you need an annual safety test, it’s important to understand the different weight categories:

  1. Total Gross Weight: This is the combined weight of the entire vehicle. This includes the driver, passengers, fuel, equipment, tools, cargo, and other items carried by the vehicle or trailer.
  2. Registered Gross Weight (RGW): This weight determines the fee paid for the vehicle’s license plates. It should be equal to or greater than the vehicle’s actual weight and its heaviest load. You can find the RGW on the right portion of your vehicle’s ownership document, next to “REG. GROSS WT.”
  3. Manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (MGVWR): This weight is determined by the manufacturer and is the maximum weight the vehicle should handle. You can locate the MGVWR on the vehicle identification number (VIN) plate. It can also be found on the driver’s door, door post, or glove compartment.

Exemptions for Personal Use

Since July 1, 2019, the Ontario Regulatory Registry has amended the Act, resulting in an exemption for vehicles used for personal towing purposes from the mandatory annual inspection. This exemption encompasses pickup trucks and trailers used for personal use.

What Classifies as Pickup Trucks

For the purpose of this Act, pickup trucks are defined as vehicles that meet two requirements: a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 6,500 kg or less and an unaltered or unmodified box that matches the original or an unmodified replacement box provided by the manufacturer.

Exemption for Personal Use

You are not required to undergo an annual inspection if you use a pickup truck or a pickup truck and trailer combination exclusively for personal use without compensation and do not transport commercial cargo, tools, or equipment commonly associated with commercial purposes.

Requirement for Commercial Use

A yellow sticker is required for vehicles used for commercial purposes or for transporting items (commercial cargo, tools, equipment, etc.) used for commercial purposes if they meet the following conditions:

  • If the vehicle’s registered gross weight (RGW), total gross weight, or manufacturer gross vehicle weight rating (MGVWR) is more than 4,500 kg or 9,920 lbs.
  • OR if the combined weight of the vehicle and the towed trailer is more than 4,500 kg or 9,920 lbs.

Importance of Annual Inspections and Safety Standards

Annual inspections are crucial to ensure that each vehicle in Ontario is safe to operate, reducing the risk of collisions caused by mechanical defects. The inspections focus on various components to ensure compliance with national safety standards and applicable legislation. The components that undergo thorough inspection include the powertrain, suspension, hydraulic brake system, brakes, steering, instruments and auxiliary equipment, lamps, electrical system, body, tires and wheels, and couplers and hitches.

If you own a vehicle or trailer that fits the abovementioned descriptions, it should have a Yellow Annual Safety Inspection Sticker. If it doesn’t, book an appointment to inspect your vehicle/trailer promptly at an authorized Motor Vehicle Inspection Station.

Failure to comply with safety standards may result in potential fines. Ensure any non-compliant items are fixed and repaired to meet current safety standards. After completing the inspection, securely attach the Yellow Annual Safety Inspection Sticker to your vehicle/trailer. Also, ensure that you have a copy of the inspection certificate in your possession.
