The distinction is that the two have dramatically different detrimental impacts on the gases contributing to global warming. With a lower Global Warming Potential, 1234YF is healthier for the environment than 134a, a greenhouse gas as destructive as carbon dioxide. 134a was nevertheless an improvement above R12, which had an astounding GWP of over 11,000, whereas 134a reduced that amount to 1430.

GM began delivering automobiles with this new technology to the market in 2013, with complete conversion expected in 2018. In 2017, models from Chrysler, Honda, and Subaru were introduced. It is expected that by 2025, all cars will incorporate 1234YF.
But don’t worry if your present car demands 134a. Though 134a is incompatible with 1234YF and is scheduled to be phased out, it is still in production and will remain as long as there is a market for repairing older vehicles.
